Deep Mining History

Just as with many other Colorado mountain town, Breckenridge has a fascinating and extensive mining history. In fact, many of the buildings along Main Street date back to Breckenridge’s early mining days in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It’s no wonder that Breck boomed to become the fine town it is today as the town’s mines have been credited with producing more than a million ounces of gold. Among that gold, a massive 13.5-pound single nugget was excavated in 1887 by miners, Tom Groves and Harry Lytton. Known today as “Tom’s Baby,” it remains the largest single piece of gold to ever come out of Colorado. And that’s just the tip of the town’s fascinating mining history. Be sure to tour Breckenridge’s famous Country Boy Mine, or read Breck’s full mining timeline to learn more.

Exciting Annual Events

All events here bring the community together in a wonderful way that’s enjoyable to locals and visitors alike. Some of the more popular events are the Breckenridge Wine Classic in September, the International Snow Sculpture Championships in January, and the Ullr Fest in December. The latter is a particularly unique event in which all townsfolk and tourists are invited to don Viking hats and celebrate all things snow in honor of Ullr, the Norse god of snow. It may sound a little strange, but it’s something that everyone in town has a blast at each and every year! Check out the Breckenridge Events Calendar for more exciting events!
