Marco Island Trip Planning

Marco Island is located along Florida’s southeastern coastline in between Naples and Everglades National Park. Marco Island is also the largest and only developed island in Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands. The Ten Thousand Islands covers an area of 55 square miles, and it is made up of a chain of islands combined with one of the world’s largest mangrove forests.

Visitors to Marco Island and the Ten Thousand Islands will find no shortage of exceptional tropical scenery along this stretch of Florida’s Gulf Coast. The many islands provide near-endless spots to enjoy fun in the sun, and the mangrove forests are fascinating to explore by kayak or boat.

How To Get To Marco Island

Most visitors to Marco Island arrive by air at the Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW), located in Fort Myers. Upon arrival at RSW, the best way to get to Marco Island is by renting a car or catching a shuttle at the airport. The total drive time is approximately one hour to cover the 48 miles between cities depending on traffic.

For step-by-step directions on getting to Marco Island from RSW as well as local rental car information, check out our Area Transportation page.

Other Cities & Attractions Near Marco Island

Although there’s more than enough exciting things to do in Marco Island to last your whole trip, the day trip opportunities for the island’s surrounding areas are well-worth exploring.

Perhaps the most impressive nearby point of interest is Everglades National Park. Since its founding in 1947, the Everglades has gained notoriety as one of the United States’ most unique and environmentally significant national parks. The park hosts an incredibly diverse array of plant and animal life, including the famous American alligator. Don't worry about these toothy critters though, as there are plenty of desginated people-paths where you can safely observe the Everglades' fascinating scenery and wildlife.

Additionally, just under 18 miles north of Marco Island is the beachfront city of Naples, FL. A tropical paradise in its own right, Naples brings a little more big-city life to Florida’s Gulf coast. Although not quite as picturesque as our Marco Island home, Naples is certainly another spot worth spending a day at during your trip!
